Power-starved people block roads in B'baria
Aggrieved people ransacked Sarail upazila power office and put blockade on two highways and one link road yesterday demanding uninterrupted supply of electricity and transfer of resident engineer of the office.
They protested the over-billing done by electric meter readers.
According to eyewitness and sources of UNO office, police and power office, about 250 local people gathered at Sarail Tempo Stand in the morning.
At around 10:00am, they attacked Sarail upazila power office and ransacked the documents and furniture there. All the staffs and officers fled for safety.
On information, a team from Sarail police station rushed to the spot.
The agitators then moved to Sarail Upazial Health Complex point and barricaded SarailNasirnagar Road from 10:30am to 12:30 noon.
They also barricaded DhakaSylhet and ComillaSylhet highways at Kuttapara point of the upazila, causing a long traffic jam on both sides of the roads.
Sarail Upazila Parishad Chairman Md Rafique Uddin Thakur and Sarail Upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) Md Helal Uddin rushed to the spot, assured uninterrupted power supply in the area and persuaded the aggrieved people to withdraw the barricade.
When contacted, Sarail UNO Helal Uddin said the unwanrted situation was created due to negligence of the resident engineer of Sarail upazila power office.
