Trial of 49 mutineers starts in Khulna today
The special court, set up at 41 Rifles Battalion headquarters in Satkhira, yesterday fixed February 6, 2011 for hearing on charge framing against 105 mutineers of the battalion while trial of 49 mutineers of 23 Rifles Battalion under Khulna sector will begin at a special court at the sector headquarters today.
In Satkhira, All the 105 mutineers were yesterday produced in the special court headed by Rajshahi Sector Commander Lt Col Yahiya Azam Khan.
Two other members of the court are Lt Col Khalid Hossain and Major Touhidul Islam, reports our correspondent.
The court yesterday took the allegations against the BDR jawans into its cognisance.
Lt Col Enayet Karim, commanding officer of 41 Rifles Battalion, appeared as the prosecutor. He read out the allegations against the mutineers.
The chief of the court ordered supply of copies of charges to the accused while granting them 27 days to get prepared for reply.
Our Staff Correspondent from Khulna reported that Trial of 49 mutineers of 23 Rifles Battalion at Goalkhali under Khalishpur Police Station in Khulna will begin at a special court at the sector headquarters at 9:00am today.
The BDR personnel were accused of participating in the rebellion on February 25 and 26 last year, expressing solidarity with the mutineers of BDR headquarters at Pilkhana in the capital.
A case against the 49 Jawans was filed with Khalishpur Police Station on April 29 last year accusing them of breach of discipline and vandalism under BDR Act. The then officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station Abu Mokaddem Ali lodged the case as complainant. He was also made investigation officer of this case.
In the case statement, the complainant stated that the accused mutineers of 23rd Rifles Battalion came out of their camp with arms on February 26, set fire to the official car of Major Azhar and damaged the car of Major Sarwari Alam of the battalion.
The stage is set to begin mutiny trial at the special court where security measures have been stepped up deploying 100 policemen, said OC Moksedul Momen of Khalishpur Police Station.
