Dharla erodes 85 acres of aman land in 3 days
More areas under threat as erosion continues in Lalmonirhat

Dharla River eroded 85 acres of land with standing aman paddy at three villages of Mogholhat union in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila in the last three days. About 120 more acres of land with aman paddy are also under the threat as erosion by Dharla River has continued at the three villages -- Karnopur, Kurul and Badaitari villages. During a visit to the area yesterday morning, this correspondent saw farmers several farmers were cutting unripe paddy for selling it as feed for animals in fear of erosion. “I cultivated aman paddy on six bighas of land. Four bighas have already gone into the Dharla River in last three days. The rest two bighas of land are also under the threat of erosion,” said Morshedul Islam, 45, a farmer of Badaitari village. Another farmer Khoibor Ali, 50, of the same village said, "I cultivated aman paddy on only two bighas of land but it was eroded by Dharla River on Monday and Tuesday. I would harvest paddy from the land after a month but all my hopes are now shattered. Now I am worried about maintaining my three-member family.” Farmer Shamsul Islam, 55, and others at Karnopur village said they are cutting unripe paddy for selling it as fodder in fear of erosion. “My three-bigha-land with standing aman paddy has been eroded by Dharla River. I am cutting the unripe crop on remaining two bighas of land for selling it as straw. Otherwise, I will lose all,” Shamsul Islam said. "Erosion by Dharla River has turned many farmers of my union landless and many others with their aman paddy fields are under the threat. I have sought help to Sadar upazila administration for the erosion victim farmers," Mogholhat UP Chairman Habibur Rahman Habib said. Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Mohammad Nuruzzaman said he has visited the area and arranged listing the names of erosion-hit farmers for sending it to the higher authority concerned.
