People of remote Kalagachia village in Galachipa upazila of Patuakhali district have started voluntary work to repair a flood control embankment to save aman paddy from salty water. Over a hundred villagers including women of Kalagachia village on Saturday started work to repair the embankment that developed breaches in at least 10 points within two kilometres due to the October 6-9 tidal surge and heavy rainfall. Over 1000 acres of agricultural land will be saved from salty water from nearby rivers after completion of the work, said Kalagachia union unit of Awami League Secretary Kamiab Chowdhury, who led the work. "Through the damaged points of the flood control embankment salty water from adjacent rivers and canals enter aman paddy fields twice a day during high tides, causing damage to aman plants on a large area of land. Villagers have started repairing the damaged embankment on voluntary basis to save their paddy fields from salty water that enter their paddy fields from adjacent rivers and canals," said former lawmaker Yaqub Ali Chowdhury, also a resident of the area. Eighteen kilometres of flood control embankments were destroyed and more 55-km embankments partly damaged in seven upazilas of the district due to the recent tidal surge and heavy rainfall, said Siddiqur Rahman, executive engineer of Water Development Board.
