Govt allocates Tk 8.82cr for Gaibandha district

The government has allocated Tk 8 crore, 82 lakh and 12,000 against special 40-day employment generation programme for the ultra-poor and seasonal unemployed people of the district this year. The objective of the programme is to assist the poor, particularly jobless farm workers and day labourers, in overcoming job crisis and famine-like situation during the lean period in the months of Ashwin and Kartik of Bangla year. District relief and rehabilitation office sources said a total of 14,702 poor people including women aged between 18 and 50 years have been listed as workers to complete the project works. The project works include construction and reconstruction of katcha roads and approach roads of bridges and culverts, earth filling on the ground of different academic and religious institutions, excavation and re-excavation of derelict ponds and canals and removing water hyacinth from the water bodies. Of the total, some 2378 workers have been selected in Sadar upazila, 1381 in Palashbari, 2436 in Gobindaganj, 1624 in Sadullapur, 3337 in Sundarganj, 1262 in Fulchhari and 1884 in Saghata upazila of the district, sources said. Under this programme, a labourer will work five days in a week and get Tk 150 per day for doing seven-hour job in different fields. The project works will continue till December, until start of the full harvest of T-Aman paddy and each of the beneficiaries will receive Tk 6,000 for the 40-day work, said Shah Alam, district relief and rehabilitation officer. The project work has already begun in some of the upazilas of the district and the work in other upazilas will start very soon, he added. Earlier, Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner M Shahidul Islam formally inaugurated the programme by digging earth on the ground of Sadullapur Women's Madrasa on October 13 as the chief guest. Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Ariful Haque, public representatives, political leaders, journalists and local elite were present on the occasion.a
