River erosion takes serious turn in Pabna

Erosion by the River Padma has taken a serious turn in Sharsa union under Ishwardi upazila of Pabna district. The river devoured at least 10 houses and over 17 acres of land in a day. Locals offered special prayer yesterday and urged the authorities concerned to take immediate measures to save the union from onslaught of the river. Md Shahabul Alam, chairman of Shara Union Parishad, claimed that the Padma devoured at least 300 houses of Komorpur, Arambaria, Shekherchalk, Dhapari, Majdia, Jhaudia and Ghoshpur villages in a month. Hindu community at Komorpur village could not celebrate Durga Puja as the river recently devoured a mandir, he said. About 1,000 houses, six schools, five mosques at six other villages in Shara union are under erosion threat, the chairman added. Contacted, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board in Pabna Md Kabibur Rahman said they have already submitted a Tk 140 crore project to the authorities concerned to protect 7.5-km area from Komorpur to Jhaudia. We have also submitted a Tk 90 lakh project to take immediate prevention measures. Approval of the project is under process, he said. Meanwhile the villagers offered mass prayer for getting saves from the river erosion in the villages locals claimed.
