Trial of 23 BDR mutineers starts in B'baria today
15 more witnesses give deposition before Ctg special court
A special court-14 starts trail proceedings against 23 BDR mutineers of 1 Rifles Battalion at Kalikatcha under Sarail upazila of the district today.
Col SM Farhad, Comilla Sector commander, will chair the four-member special court at the battalion headquarters, said Operation Officer of 1 Rifles Battalion Major Masroor Ahmed at a press briefing yesterday, reports our correspondent.
Lieutenant Col Abu Saleh Muhammad Gulam Ambia will act as prosecutor in the special court. A representative of the attorney general and a civil lawyer will also be present during the trial proceedings.
According to 1 Rifles Battalion sources, 23 member of the battalion revolted against their officer on February 25 and 26 in 2009, expressing their solidarity with the mutineers of BDR headquarter in Pilkahna, Dhaka.
Following a case filed with Sarail Police Station, the BDR members were arrested on May 14, 2009.
The special court in Chittagong yesterday took deposition of 15 more witnesses against 35 mutineers of 10 Rifles Battalion's Bolipara camp, reports our staff correspondent, according to our staff correspondent.
With this, the special Court-16, set up at Rifles Training Centre and School at Baitul Izzat in Satkania, has so far recorded statements of 18 witnesses.
The accused BDR men were brought to the court amid tight security. The court was adjourned until 10:30am today.
The accused also quizzed the witnesses after getting permission of the court led by Rangamati BDR Sector Commander Col Bashirul Islam, sources said.
The court will take deposition of the Prosecutor Lt Col Mohammad Rabiul Alam and the accused today, court sources said.
On Sunday, the special court framed charges against 35 jawans of 10 Rifles Battalion's Bolipara camp for their involvement in 2009 BDR mutiny.
