Criminals cut 290 mahogany trees aged four to five years old at a garden in Fakirpur village under Pabna Sadar upazila on Saturday. Following a case filed by Azad, brother of garden owner Sohagi Begum, police arrested two alleged criminals, who are also maternal uncles of the garden owner. Sohagi Begum, a middle-aged woman, bought six decimals of land at the village from her grandfather and established the mahogany garden five years ago, police quoted locals as saying. After starting the garden, her maternal uncles and other maternal relatives started enmity with her. Sohagi's brother Azad, who filed the case with Pabna Police Station against five maternal relatives including Abul Kalam and Abdur Rashid, claimed that the criminals destroyed the garden out of jealousy, said Sub Inspector Md Kabirul Islam, also investigation officer (IO) of the case. “We have visited the spot and found that the criminals destroyed the garden and cut 290 mahogany trees aged four to five years. We arrested two of the accused -- Abul Kalam and Abdur Rashid from the village on Saturday night. We are looking for the other perpetrators of the heinous crime," said the IO.
