Transport workers stage protest

Vehicular movement on Gobindagnaj-Ghoraghat route in Gaibandha district remained stopped yesterday following death of a transport worker at Gobindaganj on Tuesday evening. Police said some transport workers beat up a coach driver of Gobindaganj for overtaking a bus at Dinajpur on Sunday. Protesting the incident, transport workers barricaded the highway at Gobindaganj Tueaday evening. As police chased the workers and tried to remove the barricade, the transport workers swooped on the law enforcers and damaged three buses. Police resorted to baton charge, leaving five transport workers injured. During chase and counter chase, a worker named Nazrul, 30, got trapped between two buses and sustained critical injuries. He died on way to Bogra hospital. Additional police forces have been deployed at Gobindaganj to avert any further incident. The transport workers alleged that Nazrul was injured in police attack and succumbed to his injuries. Officer-in-Charge of Gobindagnaj Police Station Abu Akkas Ahmed denied the allegation, saying that Nazrul got trapped between two buses and succumbed to his injuries.
