We want fair probe, justice, demands victim's mother

Family members of Monwarul Islam Sagor, who was allegedly tortured to death in police custody in Naogaon four years ago, have demanded fair probe into and justice for the incident. A Naogaon court last month ordered judicial investigation into the custodial death case but the accused police officials are threatening the complainant and the witnesses of dire consequences, Sagor's family members said at a press conference at Rajshahi Metropolitan Press Club yesterday. Police in Naogaon arrested Sagor from his in-laws' house on September 7 in 2006 suspecting his involvement into the Chowbaria police murder by outlaws. The next day, police circulated that Sagor was an outlaw and he died in heart attack. Sagor's mother Morjina Alam Shah challenged the police claim and lodged a case with a Naogaon court, accusing police of murdering Sagor in cold blood in their bid to collect bribe from his rich family. Following local people's movement, two magistrates, instead of police, prepared the inquest report and found a number of torture marks on Sagor's body. But a magistrate's court dismissed the case as CID police investigated twice into the matter and submitted final reports ignoring witnesses' statements and the two magistrates' inquest report. Then the victim's mother submitted a petition to Naogaon District and Sessions Judge's Court against the dismissal order in 2008 and two years later on July 18 this year, the court ordered judicial inquiry against nine accused. "We have no doubt that Sagor was innocent. Following my prayers, police headquarters investigated the matter and found truth behind allegations of torture and involvement of accused police officials in his death in custody," said Sagor's mother at the press conference. The four accused police officials are inspectors Shahidar Rahman and Anisar Rahman, the then officers-in-charge of Manda and Porsha police stations in Naogaon, the then sub-inspectors of Manda PS Tofazzel Hossain and Shakil Ahmed. Other accused are Dr Ayub Ali, resident medical officer of Manda upazila health complex, Nazmul Haque, medical assistant, and hospital employees Golzar Hossain, Abul Bashar and Abdur Rab.
