Criminals slaughtered a local Awami League leader at Shyamnagar village in Sadar upazila of Jhenidah early yesterday. Victim Ashadul Biswas, 35, son of Mohiuddin Biswas, was the secretary of AL Shyampur village unit. Jhenidah Police Superintendent Rezaul Karim said a number of outlaws had been demanding Tk 1 lakh from Ashadul for the last few days. They also threatened to kill him in case of failure to pay the amount, he added. As Ashadul declined to pay the money, the criminals picked him up from his Shyampur residence at about 1:00am and slaughtered at a nearby field. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed with Jhenidah Sadar police station. Meanwhile, criminals severely stabbed a Jubo League leader and injured another leader in the district. Seriously injured Jahangir Hossain, 35, is son of Abed Ali of Pabahati village under Sadar upazila while the other leader, Pintu is son of Jahar Ali of the same village. Officer-in-charge (OC) Sager Mia of Jhenidah Sadar police station said, criminals attacked municipal Jubo League leaders Jahangir and Pintu yesterday while they were coming to Jhenidah town. The gang stabbed Jahangir with a sharp knife. As his bowels came out, he was rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital. He was shifted to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition, said Dr Tanzilur Rahman of Jhenidah Sadar Hospital. Pintu was being treated at the hospital at the time of filing of this report yesterday afternoon. Party sources said, Jahangir was attacked by the hired goons of his rivals aspiring for the post of municipal Jubo League secretary. A case has been filed with Jhenidah Sadar police station.a
