Victim of brutal torture for over a month, a 10-year-old madrasa student in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur is fighting for life at Parbatipur LAMB Hospital. On July 27, Md Ashraful Alam, a teacher of Nurania Hafizia Madrasa at Moulvibazar village in Parbatipur upazila, accused Md Shahjalal, a student of the madrasa, of stealing Tk 100 and mercilessly beat him with a whip, said madrasa students Md Alauddin and Md Asaduzzaman who witnessed the incident. Shahjalal fell unconscious due to the beating, they said, adding that later the boy was taken to a secret place. Infections developed in the torture marks over the boy's body and he went unconscious several times as he was continually tortured, being confined to a madrasa room for over a month, sources said. On Monday last, the boy was taken to Parbatipur LAMB Hospital. "During admission, the boy had high fever and infections across the body," Dr Muhammad Hasan, a physician of the hospital, said. "The boy's condition is critical and it will need a good amount of time and money for his recuperating from the infections as he had remained untreated for a long time," Dr Suvash Chandra, another doctor of the hospital, said over cell phone. Shahjalal's mother Hasina Banu, who arranged sending her son to madrasa despite hardship due to her husband's death, is now worried abouta cost of the boy's treatment. She demanded justice for the brutality on her son. When contacted, Md Ansar Ali, president of the madrasa management committee, said after hearing the incident he rushed the boy to the hospital on Monday. Nur Mohammad, 72, who lives beside the madrasa, said he heard the creaming of the boy when he was being whipped. When contacted, madrasa teacher Md Ashraful Alam said he whipped boy as punishment for stealing a 100-taka-note of a neighbouring farmer who kept the note at a sunny place for drying.
