Women jailed for murder, drug peddling
A woman got life for murder in Thakurgaon while another was sentenced to 3-year RI for drug peddling in Satkhira yesterday.
A Thakurgaon court yesterday sentenced a woman to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) for killing the second wife of her husband in 2008, reports our correspondent.
Convict Fazila Khatun is first wife of Abdus Salam of Kharibari village under Sadar upazila.
District and Sessions Judge Habibur Rahaman handed down the verdict in a crowded court room in presence of the accused.
According to the prosecution, Abdus Salam of Kharibari village under Sadar upazila had three wives.
On 2 February in 2008 morning, Nur Jahan, 19, third wife of Salam went to bring water from a tube-well at their house.
There Fazila and Nur Jahan engaged in an altercation over a trifle matter.
At one stage, Fazila stabbed on the back of Nur Jahan leaving her critically injured.
The family members rushed her to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on the same night.
The next day Salekul Islam, elder brother of Abdus Salam, filed a murder case with Thakurgaon police station accusing Fazila Khatun.
In Satkhira, a court yesterday sentenced a woman to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for drug peddling, reports our correspondent.
The court also fined her Tk 500, in default, to suffer 3 months more rigorous imprisonment.
Convict Monowara Begum, 32, is wife of Abdul Jalil of village Garerkanda in Satkhira town.
Judge AHM Mahmudur Rahman of the Joint Session Judge's Court pronounced the judgment.
According to court sources, Inspector Kazi Mahmud Harun of the Narcotics Department raided Monowara's house at Garerkanda and recovered two grams heroin on May 21 in 2008.
The court examining the witnesses and relevant documents found her guilty and awarded the punishment.
