BSF kills cattle trader, returns abducted youth

Body of a Bangladeshi cattle trader, allegedly tortured to death by BSF, was found floating in a Satkhira river yesterday while a young man abducted by the Indian border guards in Chuadanga was returned to BDR on Monday. According to our Satkhira correspondent, body of a young cattle trader, who was allegedly tortured to death by Indian Border Security Force (BSF), was found floating at Khanjia point of the river Ichhamati in Debhata upazila yesterday. The identity of the 20-year old cattle trader could no be known immediately, police said. The victim along with others went to India to buy cattle BSF men at Barun camp under Basirhat police station there arrested him and tortured him to death two days ago. Later they threw the body in the river, according to a report received here from across the border yesterday. Locals found the body of the victim floating in river lchhamati. They informed Debhata upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) who asked police to recover the body. BSF on Monday returned another Bangladeshi following a flag meeting with BDR at Chuadanga frontier. Family members alleged that BSF tortured the Bangladeshi citizen after abduction, reports our Kushtia correspondent. According to BDR sources, Askar Ali, 30, son of Abdur Razzak of Jhajdanga in Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga was fishing at a canal near the border. A BSF team from Haldarpara camp in Nadia district of West Bengal entered Bangladesh territory and picked up Askar at gunpoint a about 3:00pm. BDR at Sultanpur camp under Damurhuda upazila immediately protested the incident and asked BSF for a flag meeting. Meantime relatives of the hapless Bangladeshi went to the border area and caught an Indian citizen at about 4:30pm and handed over to Sultanpur BDR camp. The Indian was identified as Pashupoti Bux, 30, son of Ajitpati Box of Haldarpara in Nadia district of West Bengali. After a while BSF replied in the positive to hold a flag meeting. Later, a company level flag meeting was held at Abhoynagar frontier in Chuadanga at about 7:00pm. After the meeting, BSF handed over the Bangladeshi national Askar and took back their citizen Pashupoti Bux. Damurhuda police later arrested two relatives of Askar on charge of their involvement in confining the Indian national Pashupoti. The arrestees are Ator Ali and Abdul Khaleq. Askar is now undergoing treatment at a local clinic.
