Two youths get 15 years' RI in arms case
A court in Sylhet on Sunday convicted two young men and sentenced each to 15 years rigorous imprisonment in absentia in an arms case.
The convicts are Shahnoor Ahmad, son of late Abdur Razzaque of Paglapirgaon in Sunamganj Sadar upazila and Shahidur Rahman, son of Hasim Mia of Sonatola village in Sylhet Sadar upazila, reports UNB.
According to the prosecution, Rab personnel arrested Shahnoor and Shahidur along with a foreign made revolver from 'Al-Rahat' restaurant at Madina market in Sylhet city at about 9:30pm on November 15 in 2007.
Later, an arms case was filed against them with the Kotwali police station.
After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge M Manjurul Haque Khan pronounced the verdict.
In Chuadanga, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Sunday arrested an arms peddlar and recovered a brand new revolver from him, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
Rab had information that Abdul Jabbar, 33, son of Abdul Halim of Bahilapota in Jibonnagar upazila in Chuadanga district used to sell firearms illegally.
A team of Rab-6 led by Flight Lieutenant Habibur Rahman contacted Jabbar in the guise of arms buyer.
As per deals with Jabbar, the Rab team went to a banana orchard at Sahapur village at about 3.30pm on Sunday. The Rab arrested Jabbar when he came to the spot to sell the firearms.
Flight Lieutenant Habibur Rahman told this correspondent that Jabbar confessed to doing illegal arms trade.
After interrogation at their office, Rab handed Jabbar over to Jibonnagar police on Sunday night.
A Chuadanga court yesterday sent him to jail.
