At least 60 people, including a sub-inspector, were injured in fresh clashes between two groups over toll collection at a local market in the district yesterday. The clash started around 9:00am between the two groups of villagers, one led by Fayez Miah of Birashar village and another by Latif Miah of Kandipara village, said police and witnesses. During the clash, the villagers vandalised around 10 shops, looted valuables, and hurled brick chips at rivals, police said. On information, a police team led by Hamidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar police station, rushed to the spot and fired 20 rounds of rubber bullets and lobbed 15 tear gas shells to disperse the people. The situation was brought under control at about 12:00pm, and additional police were deployed in the market area. Hospital sources said 27 of the injured, including Sub Inspector Md Mahbub, took treatments at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital while others took first aid at medicine shops to avoid the police. Police said the clash was a sequel to Thursday's dispute over toll collection between Latif, a trader of Ananda Bazar, and Fayez, the toll collector of the market, that led to an initial clash on Friday injuring at least 30 people. Fayez Miah, who was also injured, filed a case in this connection.
