Indian cattle trader killed in BSF firing
Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Wednesday night shot dead an Indian cattle trader on Jalalpur border under Basirhat police station in India opposite to Shakhra border in Debhata upazila.
The deceased was identified as Dayal Chandra Mondal, 40, of village Kodalia in Basirhat police station in India.
The BSF men of Jalalpur camp opened fire on the cattle traders while trying to enter Bangladesh through Jalalpur border, leaving Dayal dead on the spot at about 11:45pm on August 25, according to a report received here yesterday.
BSF men later took away the body, sources said.
Our Staff Correspondent in Sylhet adds: BSF did not respond to the BDR's call for a flag meeting on Sripur border for return of a Bangladeshi national, who was picked up by the Indian guards on Wednesday afternoon from near Sripur border in Jaintapur upazila.
A letter from BDR was handed over to the Indians yesterday morning in this regard when they agreed to return the man in the afternoon.
But after a few hours later they informed the BDR that the Bangladeshi national had been handed over to the Dauki police station, border sources informed.
Camp in-charge of Sripur BDR camp Subedar Younus said the BSF men from the Rongthong camp in Meghalaya intruded about 40 yards inside Bangladesh territory and picked up Mostafa Miah, son of Suruj Miah of village Komolabari under Jaintapur upazila.
Mostafa was catching fish with neighbours at that time.
The others managed to flee the scene while BSF caught Mostafa and tied up his eyes before taking him to India, eyewitnesses said.
