Jamaat leader held, 2 Shibir men acquitted

Police picked up Shafiqul Islam Nizami, 44, ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Paikgachha municipality unit, under Khulna district on Tuesday night. The Jamaat leader, also acting principal of Paikgachha Alim Madrasa, was shown arrested under Section 54 of Bangladesh Penal Code (BPC). Police yesterday produced the Jamaat leader in a court that sent him to jail. Meanwhile, A court here yesterday acquitted two Shibir leaders of Khulna city unit in a case filed with Khanjahan Ali police station under sections 5 and 6 of Speedy Trial Act on June 30. The acquitted Shibir leaders are Abu Sufian, president of Ward no 3 unit, and Sharif AL Mamun, general secretary of the unit. Judge Abu Shamim Azad of the Speedy Trial Tribunal, Khulna, pronounced the judgment in the case at 1:30pm. The judge acquitted the Shibir leaders as charges brought against them could not be proved beyond doubt. Police picked up the Shibir leaders at 4:30pm on June 30 while they were leading a procession at Shiromoni area of Khulna city protesting arrest of Jamaat leaders Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid and Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee. Sub-Inspector Badiuzzaman filed the case naming the two Shibir leaders as accused. Sub-Inspector Shariful Islam, who investigated the case, pressed charges against the accused on July 8. Statements of 13 prosecution witnesses were recorded during trial of the case.
