20 hurt as rivals clash in Moulvibazar

At least 20 people were injured while 20 shops, two vehicles and a motorbike damaged during a clash in Borhat area in the town. Plying of vehicle on Moulvibazar-Sylhet road also came to a halt for an hour due to the clash. Police and locals said, the clash took place between the supporters of Md Masud Ahmed, councilor of ward no-9 of Moulvibazar Pourashava (Barkapon area) and people of neighboring Borhat area of the town at about 12.30am early yesterday. Locals said, the clash ensued as Masud Ahmed caught a young man named Misir of Brahat area while collecting illegal toll from local shops and handed him to the police on Monday. This agitated a section of people of Barhat area. Meanwhile, Jalal Ahmed, another councilor of ward No-6, blamed Masud for always 'catching' innocent people who oppose him. Councilor Masud, however said, Misir of Borhat is a known extortionist. "As a public representative, it is my duty to check crime in the locality", he said. Amulya Kumar Chawdhury, officer in charge (OC) of Moulvibazar Sadar Model Thana said several shops were damaged and a few people injured in the clash. Meanwhile, local AL leaders were trying to settle the dispute till filing this report yesterday, afternoon. In Faridpur, at least 40 people were injured, three seriously, in a clash between two rival groups at Sharukdia bazaar in Saltha upazila on Tuesday, report UNB. Local people said there was a longstanding rivalry between Bakul Matubbor and Moloy Bosh over establishing supremacy in the area. They said a gang terrorists forcibly took away four cows from the cowshed of Mosharraf Hossain, a supporter of Bakul Matubbor of Sharukdia village. Tension heightened after the incident as it was suspected that the criminals belonged to the Moloy Bosh group. Later, both the groups equipped with lethal weapons locked into a fierce clash at the bazaar, leaving 40 people injured from both sides. Critically injured Biplob, 25, Sahid, 26 and Aslam, 22, were rushed to Faridpur General Hospital. On information RAB-8 members rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
