Man gets life for wife murder

A court on Monday sentenced one person to rigorous life imprisonment for killing his wife in 2006. According to the prosecution in brief, Bidisha Chandra Roy, 30, son of Joyotish Chandra Roy of Putimari village of Kishoreganj upazila beat up his wife Latika Rani mercilessly on 8 July, 2006 over a trivial matter. Latika died on the spot and Bidisha concealed her body in a manhole of his house. Two days later Bidisha arranged her cremation at the local cremation ground of the Hindus. As locals came to know the incident they obstructed the cremation and informed police. Kishoreganj police immediately rushed to the spot and seized the body. Father of the deceased Nripendra Nath Roy later filed a murder case with local police station accusing Bidisha and four others of murder. The investigation officer pressed charges against all the five accused. Additional district and session judge Ansar Ali after verifying all the witnesses and evidences on Monday pronounced the verdict. He also fined Bidisha Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail. The court also sentenced each of four other accused -- Lalit Chandra Roy, 55, Dinesh Chandra Roy, 47, Krisna Chandra Mohanta, 20 and Nitai Chandra Roy, 30, -- to three years imprisonment and fined Tk 1000, in default, to suffer 15 days more in jail.
