Move cautiously ahead of election, police warn UP chairmen

2 remanded in Abu Sayeed murder case

Khulna district police administration has sent letters to all 68 union parishad (UP) chairmen of the district to move cautiously as outlaws are trying to create panic, committing heinous crimes. Police Superintendent Tanvir Haider Chowdhury said he took the move apprehending attacks centring UP elections sheduled to be held next winter. Probable candidates for the post of UP chairman have already started campaigning against the sitting chairmen in their own constituencies at a time when outlaws are moving at large in different giuses, he said He further said the UP chairmen are not at all entitled to get official arrangement for their security. So, they are to arrange private guards at their own cost. The UP Chairmen have also been asked to file general diary with the police stations concerned in case of any threat on their life. Police will take necessary steps in this regard just on the basis of general diary, said ASP Md Arefin Jewell. He said, lawmakers, chairmen and vice chairmen of upazila parishads of the district have been requested to inform the police stations concerned before attending any function and visiting any place in their constituency. They have also been asked to take police help if there is any security risk, the ASP added. Meanwhile, outlaws Masum Reza and Mehedi Anam Ranju and were taken on a two-day remand yesterday in connection with Damodar UP chairman Sarder Abu Saeed murder case. Masum is an armed cadre of Janajuddho faction of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist (PBCP) while Mehedi joined the same faction of the PBCP after being expelled from Phultala upazila unit of Chhatra League early this year, said ASP Md Nasiruddin, also the investigation officer of the murder case. Sarder Abu Saeed Badal was shot dead by two unidentified assailants near his residence at Damodar village under Phultala upazila of Khulna district at 10:30am on August 16. Mehedi was expelled from Phultala Chhatra League in January this year for his close link with outlaws. Masum and Mehedi were wanted in several criminal cases filed with Phultala Police Station, the investigation officer said. Probationer Sub Inspector (PSI) Mostafa Mahbubullah was stand released from Phultala Police Station of Khulna district Monday afternoon, suspecting his close link with the outlaws of Phultala upazila. This action was taken following an allegation made by some leaders of different political parties including AL and BNP when Khulna Police Superintendent Tanvir Haider Chowdhury visited Phultala Police Station on Sunday afternoon. The leaders alleged that Mostafa had passed information of police raids to Mehedi Anam Ranju after the murder of UP chairman Sarder Abu Saeed. The PSI joined Koira Police Station yesterday.
