Police arrest one
One person was arrested on Sunday night in connection with the killing of Jatyia Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) activist Sujit Kumar Singha Roy in Mirpur upazila of the district on Saturday night.
The arrestee is Hitler of Kazipara village under the upazila. Police said they are interrogating the arrestee and also looking for one Ashraf who took away Sujit from a shop at the village in his motorbike on Saturday night.
JSD activist Sujit was abducted on Saturday night and his body with throat slit was found in Lkahmidhar water body in the upazila Sunday morning.
Asit Kumar Singha Roy, elder brother of Sujit, filed a case with Mirpur Police Station on Sunday, accusing 13 people, including regional leader of outlawed Gono Bahini Anwar Hossain Anu, of killing his brother.
According to police, Sujit came out of his house at around 8:30pm on Saturday after receiving a phone call. Sujit arrived at a shop of Kazipur at around 9:30 pm and Ashraf, a suspected cadre of outlawed Gono Bahini and also an accomplice of Anwar Hossain Anu, took away Sujit from the shop in a motorbike.
“Sujit might have been killed by outlawed Gono Bahini and one Anawar Hossain alias Anu, a regional leader of the outfit, was the mastermind behind the murder,” Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Police Station Mehedi Hasan said.
Sujit's cousin and president of JSD Bheramara upazila unit Ranjit Kumar Singha Roy was shot dead by the operatives of outlawed Gono Bahini in October 20, 1998. Anwar Hossain Anu is prime accused in Ranjit murder case which is still pending with a Kushtia court.
Sources said Ranjit was killed as he raised his voice against the criminal activities of Gono Bahni in Mirpur area.
Golam Mohsin, JSD district unit president has demanded immediate arrest of the killers of Sujit. JSD Mirpur and Daulatpur units brought out processions at the upazila headquarters on Sunday evening demanding immediate arrest of Sujit's killers. Contacted, Kushtia Police Superintendent Sahabuddin Khan said police have identified the killers and drive is on to arrest them.
