Smugglers attack BDR men in B'baria, 10 hurt

At least ten people, including a BDR man, were injured as a gang of smugglers swooped on a team of paramilitary force at Brahmanbaria Railway Station yesterday. Police and witnesses said when Dhaka bound intercity 'Provati Express' from Chittagong arrived at Brahmanbaria Railway Station at around 12:30pm, a team of BDR personnel led by Subedar Abdul Gafur raided a compartment of the train and seized a sack of cumin (Jira). Hearing the news, a photojournalist of Dainik Ajker Hal Chal, a local Bangla daily, rushed to the spot and tried to snap the seized smuggled goods. As BDR personnel prevented the photojournalist from taking any photograph, he locked in an altercation with them, At one stage, a gang of smugglers with the help of some local youths chased the BDR men and hurled stones at them, leaving Subedar Abdul Gafur injured. The paramilitary troops retaliated by clubbing the attackers. Nine people, including the photojournalist named Shahin were injured in BDR action. Subedar Abdul Gafur and Shahin were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital while the rest given first aid. No was arrested in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. In Chapainawabganj, BDR arrested three arms and drug pedlars at Kushkini para under Gomostapur upazila of the district on Friday night and recovered one pistol, four bullets, one magazine and heroin from their possession, reports our correspondent. The arrestees are Faruk Hossain, 26, son of Mokbul Hossain of Kazla village under Nachole upazila, Roni, 26, son of Kaikaus Uddin of Kansat village and Hasan, 28, son of Mofiz Uddin of Chaukpara under Shibganj upazila. Nazrul Islam, Operation Officer of 39 Rifles Battalion, said acting on a tip-off, a BDR patrol team arrested the three while they were going to Shibganj from Gomostapur by a motorcycle. After searching them, the team recovered one pistol, four bullets, one magazine, 75 packets heroin and three mobile sets from the gang, he added. Later, BDR handed the three to Gomostapur Police Station and lodged a case against them.
