One to die, 16 get life in two murder cases
One person was sentenced to death while 16 got life on Wednesday in two murder cases in Sylhet and Panchagarh districts.
Additional District & Sessions Judge-I of Sylhet Md. Nazir Ahmed sentenced one person to death and 14 others to life term imprisonment in a sensational murder case in Balaganj upazila, reports our staff correspondent.
Convict Azam Ali, son of Safar Ali of village Mokbelpur was awarded capital punishment while his brothers Kutub Ali and Rajab Ali, Hanif Ullah, son Anjab Ullah, Shayesta Miah, Bashir Miah and Mostakin Ali, sons of Hanif Ullah, Abdullah and Nur Miah, sons of Suruj Ali, Mohit Ranjan Das, son of Manotanjan Das, Ramzan Ali, son of Ambar Ullah, Suruj Ali, son of Hashim Ullah, Rafique Miah, son of Ulfat Ullah, Ustar Miah, son of Haris Ullah, all hailing from the same village and Abdul Jalil from Sarbanandapur were sentence to life term jail.
The prosecution case in brief is that Azam Ali and others swooped on Tunu Miah on 9 August, 2003 following an altercation with mutwalli (caretaker) and others over the village mosque's fund.
Azam hit Tunu Miah with a sharp weapon causing his instant death. A few others also sustained injuries during the clash. Victim's uncle Terab Ali filed a case with the Balaganj police, who on investigation, filed charge sheet on 31 March, 2004 against 16.
The judge took testimony of 17 prosecution witnesses during the trial. He passed the judgment exempting Abdul Barik as he died during the trial.
Away in Panchagarh, a court Wednesday sentenced two persons to life term rigorious imprisonment (RI) for killing a man at Boyalmari village under Tentulia upazila in Panchagarh district in 2007, reports Thakurgaon correspondent.
The convicts are Mohammad Rafiq and Mohammad Abdul Majid of the same village.
District and Sessions Judge Md. Abdus Salak handed down the verdict in a crowded court room in presence of the accused.
The court also fined them Tk.10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in jail.
Accordingf to prosecution, on 11 July in 2007 the two men and their accomplices engaged in an altercation over a disputed land at the village with Akabbar Hossain. At one stage they beatup Akabbar mercilessly, leaving him seriously injured.
Akabbar succumbed to his injuries on his way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital on the same day.
Later victim's wife Nurjahan filed a murder case with Tentulia police station accusing 13 people.
After investigation, the IO of the case pressed charges against the accused on 18 November in 2007.
The court acuitted Nurul Islam, Yakub Ali, Korban Ali, Moinul Islam, Shahera Banu, Mazeda Begum, Shaheb Ali, Haider Ali, Abdur Rahim, Shamim and Ziaul Islam as the allegation against them could not be proved.
