16 sued on war crime charges in 2 districts

Two cases were filed on Monday and Thursday last in Jessore and Netrakona accusing 16 people of commiting war crimes in 1971. Four people were sued in Jessore on Monday on charge of killing, looting and vandalising houses at Premchara village under Bagharpara upazila during the war of liberation in 1971. Altaf Biswas, son of Afsar Biswas, of the village filed the case with the judicial magistrate's court. The court took the matter into cognizance and directed the officer-in-charge of Bagharpara to take necessary steps in this regard, reports our correspondent. The accused in the case are Amzad Ali Mollah, Keramot Mollah, Noushir Biswas and Wohab Mollah of the same village. According to the case statement, the accused led by Amzad Ali Mollah setup a 'rajaker' camp at the house of Noushir Biswas at Premchara village. They committed various crimes including rape, killing, setting fire to houses and looting during the liberation war. On August 16, 1971 the accused attacked the family of Afsar Biswas, killed Afsar and assaulted his wife and son. The rajakers also looted and vandalised their house. In Netrakona, a freedom fighter was named as an accused in a war crime case filed against 12 people on Thursday. Mohammad Ali Reza, nephew of late freedom fighter Badiujjaman Mukta of village Narandra Nagar under Netrakona Sadar upazila of the district filed the case with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Aminul Haque, reports our correspondent. The complainant stated that the accused caught his uncle, freedom fighter Badiujjaman Mukta, from Birampur Bazar in Netrakona Sadar upazila on 28 Kartik of 1378 Bengali year and shot him dead in Mukterpara Bridge area in the town. Meanwhile, denying the charges accused Md Abdur Rashid, 60, son of late Hamidur Rahaman of village Bhugapara of Atpara upazila in the district and a liberation war veteran showed his certificate signed by General MAG Osmani, military chief of liberation war, at a press conference held at his own residence in the town Sunday night. Abdur Rashid claimed he was implicated in the case as a part of the conspiracy hatched by anti-liberation forces in the area.
