3 hurt as Rab, arms pedlars trade fire
4 held, arms recovered in Sylhet
Three people, including a Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) member, sustained injuries in a gunfight between the Rab and arms pedlers at Pirijpur of South Surma upazila late on Tuesday.
Rab arrested four members of the suspected arms trading gang from the spot. The detainees are Kayes Ahmed, 42, Abdul Wahid, 40, Faisal Ahmed, 30 and Ripon, 25.
Injured Kayes and Wahid were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College hospital.
Some members of the elite force, in the guise of buyers, contracted the gang for buying an LG, a sawed off shotgun and cartridges against cash, said Rab officials.
Plainclothes lawmen started examining the firearms while another team surrounded the area near Dhopatila around 11:40pm. At one stage the miscreants opened fire and attempted to flee the scene.
The Rab team returned shots at the gang evolving a gunfight. Rab men caught Kayes with bullet in his left leg while Corporal Shafiqul Islam suffered minor injury.
Later the law enforcers arrested three more members of the gang with the help of locals.
A light gun, a sawn off shotgun, three pistol bullets and a motorbike were recovered from the spot.
Kayes Ahmed is a village doctor and runs a medicine shop at Silam Tikorpara mosque market, claimed his family members. They demanded enquiry into the incident.
The arrestees would be handed over to South Surma police, said Rab- 9 Commander Syed Anagh at a press briefing held at its headquarters at Islampur yesterday afternoon.
