Khulna UP Chairman Murder
Protest on, no case filed, no arrest yet
An uneasy calm is prevailing in Phultala upazila following murder of Damodar union parishad chairman Sarder Abu Saeed Badal.
All shops at the upazila headquarters remained closed for the second day yesterday in protest against the murder, Local BNP held a condolence meeting followed by a mourning procession in the morning.
Police seized the blood stained motorcycle, which the slain UP chairman was riding at the time of being gunned down. Though no case was filed with Phultala Police Station as of filing of this report as 5:00pm yesterday, police launched combing operation to arrest the killers.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Daud Hossain said the murder was committed by hired killers. But he did not tell who hired the killers for killing the UP chairman.
Leaders of BNP Khulna city and district units issued a joint press statement on Monday night, accusing the ruling party men of masterminding the murder of Badal. They demanded immediate arrest of the killers and the masterminds.
Sarder Abu Saeed Badal was gunned down at around 11:00am on Monday near his house at Damodar under the upazila. He was the organising secretary of Phultala upazila BNP.
Two young men waylaid Badal when he was going to the union parishad office on a motorbike from his house. They fired five bullets from their revolvers from point blank range, hitting him in the head, chest and back, said witnesses and police.
He was rushed to the emergency ward of Khulna Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
Protesting the murder, locals put up barricades at several places of Khulna-Jessore highway, disrupting transport services on different routes of south-western region.
The slain UP chairman was elder brother of Phultala Upazila Parishad Chairman Ariful Islam Mithu, also the president of Phultala unit of BNP.
