'Bring back condemned killers hiding abroad'

The National Mourning Day on the 35th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed in districts across the country yesterday with a demand to bring back the six other condemned killers absconding abroad to complete implementation of the court verdict. Bangabandhu was killed along with most members of his family on the fateful night of August 15, 1975 at his Dhanmondi residence. The day's programme began with hoisting of national flag at half mast atop government and non-government offices, buildings and all other establishments. The other programmes include placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, chidren's painting competition, Quran Khwani, milad mahfil, iftar and special prayer seeking divine blessings for the departed souls of Bangabandhu and other martyrs of August 15, discussion on the life and work of Bangabandhu and screening of documentary titled Chiranjib Bangabandhu, according to our correspondents. In Narail, local unit of the Awami League and socio-cultural organisations paid homage to the father of the nation with placing wreaths at his portrait. Other programmes include discussion meeting, children's painting competition, milad mahfil, feeding the destitute and special prayer, seeking eternal peace for the departed souls of Bangabandhu other martyrs of August 15. In Khagrachhari, a mourning procession was brought out in the district headquarters in the morning. Local Awami League, cultural organisations and district administration observed the day by holding discussion meetings on the life and work of Bangabandhu. Addressing a discussion at the town hall auditorium, the speakers demanded that the government bring back the six other Bangabandhu's killers absconding abroad to complete the verdict in the killing case. Local lawmaker Jatindra Lal Tripura was the chief guest at the discussion chaired by Deputy Commissioner Anisul Haque Bhuiyan. In Observance of the day, Pabna district Awami League and different socio-cultural organisations chalked out progammes at the district headquarter. A mourning procession was brought out from district AL office in the morning. Addressing a discussion meeting at the AL office at noon, the speakers urged the government to bring back the six other killers absconding abroad to complete the execution of court verdict. Chaired by lawmaker Samsur Rahman Sarif Dilu, also the district AL president, the meeting was addressed, among others, by AL leaders advocate Amjad Hossain, Saidul Haque Chunnu, Rezaur Rahim Lal. Pabna district administration, Pabna University of Science and Technology also observed the day. In Brahmanbaria, the district administration and local Awami League chalked out programmes to mark the National Mourning Day. The programmes include hoisting of national flag at half-mast, placing wreath on the portrait of the father of the nation, special prayer, poetry recitation, and painting competition, milad mahfil and screening of documentary on the life and work of Bangabandhu. A mourning procession led by Deputy Commissioner Md Abdul Manna was brought out in the town at around 9:00am. Narsingdi district administration organised children's painting contest at local Shilpakala Academy and brought out a mourning procession from there. After the Maghrib prayers, Swadinata Chikitsak Parishad distributed free medicine among the poor. In Chapainawabganj, a discussion meeting was held at Shahid Satu Hall in the town in observance of the National Mourning day. At the meeting, the speakers urged the government to bring back the six other killers of Bangabandhu from abroad and execute them as per court verdict in the Bangabandhu killing case. With Deputy Commissioner KM Ali Azam in the chair, the meeting was addressed by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Enamul Haque, lawmaker from Chapainawabganj Sadar constituency Abdul Wadud, and lawmaker Shawkat Ara.
