Deposition of 15 PWs recorded

Sylhet divisional speedy trial tribunal yesterday recorded the deposition of 15 more prosecution witnesses (PWs) in the cases filed after the grenade attack on a rally of the AL leader Suranjit Sengupta in Sunamganj six years ago. The incident left one AL activist killed while over 30 others sustained injuries. The witnesses submitted their deposition for the fourth day yesterday The deposition of 15 PWs was recorded in presence of the outlawed Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and others accused. The same court on 30 June this year framed charges against the accused and started recording the deposition on 13 July, special public prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar told this correspondent. Yesterday's proscution witnesses included former class-I magistrate Hazera Khatun, who recorded the confessional statement of accused Mufti Mainuddin. With this, the court recorded deposition of 24 prosecution witnesses out of 63 in the cases. Tribunal judge Md. Mahbub Ul Islam then fixed 24 August for recording the deposition of other prosecution witnesses. AL activist Abul Wahid, 45, was killed while about 30 others sustained injuries as a bomb was thrown at the dais moments after the public meeting held at Derai upazila headquarters in Sunamganj on 21 June of 2004. However, AL stalwart Suranjit Sengupta MP and other leaders escaped unhurt as they got down from the dais just before the attack. The investigation officer in the case was changed 6 times as there were no clue to the blast. At last, CID Inspector Shafiqur Rahman on 14 December 2008 filed charge sheet in the 2 cases with the judicial magistrate court in Sunamganj against the Huji's Mufti Abdul Hannan and 6 others for the attack. One of the cases was lodged under explosive substances act and the other for killing, court sources said. The other accused are Mufti Abdul Hannan's younger brother Mofizul Islam alias Mohibullah, Shariful Alam Bipul, Delwar Hossain Ripon, Hafij Nayeem Ahmed, Mufti Main Uddin and Naziur Rahman Nazu.
