Students protest hike of railway fare

Students of a Gaibandha college on Tuesday brought out a procession protesting hike of yearly railway fare while students of another college in Thakurgaon on Monday formed a human chain demanding steps to reduce session jam. In Gaibandha, a few hundred students of Gaibandha Government Boys College on Tuesday brought out a procession demanding cut in yearly railway ticket charge by August 21, reports our correspondent. Organised by Railjatri Chhatra Sangram Parishad, the procession paraded main roads of the town and held a meeting on deputy commissioner's office premises. Presided by its convener Paramanada Das, the rally was addressed by Aminul Islam, president of Samajtantrik Chhattra Front, Bazlur Rahman, president, college unit, Avijit Kumar Das, president of Gaibandha Chhatra Union, Shameem Ara Meena and Mizanur Rahman. The students submitted a memo to DC and threatened to launch tougher programme if their demand is not met by the deadline. According to the students earlier the privately run rails issued yearly ticket at only Tk 75, but from April this year they enhanced the fare to Tk 1,440. On July 26, staff of privately run railway beat up three students of Gaibandha Govt Boys College for not paying enhanced fare of the ticket. Following the incident the students of the college besieged Gaibandha station demanding punishment to the culprits. Students of Thakurgaon Government College on Monday formed a human chain in the town demanding steps to reduce session jam. A discussion followed the human chain where the general students narrated the problems faced by them at their educational institution. The students also demanded separate examination building at their college, saying that in the name of examination a good number of classes are postponed in every year. Shortage of teachers is another nagging problem to hold classes properly, they said demanding recruitment of necessary teachers at institution to ensure proper and quality education.
