RU students lay siege to administrative building

Students of different departments at Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday laid a siege to the administrative building demanding expulsion of a student for allegedly sexually harassing another student. According to the agitating students, Assaduzzaman Siju, a fourth year student of RU economics department sexually harassed a third year student of the same department a few months ago. The victim has become mentally ill as Siju allegedly tortured her on and often, they alleged. They alleged that the accused is still threatening the victim's family and creating pressure on them to marry the girl. The agitating students besieged the administrative building for one and half hours and kept the building's main gate under lock and key till 11:30pm demanding immediate expulsion of the culprit. Later, the protesters locked in an altercation with proctor Prof Chowdhury Zakaria as he barred the students from meeting vice chancellor. However the proctor later allowed the students to meet the VC in face of demonstration. At the meeting with VC Prof Abdus Sobhan, the students threatened that they would go for tougher agitation on campus if he did not take immediate steps in this regard. Prof Sobhan sought more times needed for official procedures. Earlier, on Tuesday, the students placed a memorandum to the vice chancellor demanding expulsion of the culprit within 48 hours. They launched a mass signature campaign in favour of the demand on the day. The students also laid a similar siege to the administrative building on July 21 on the same issue.
