One killed, 30 injured as AL, Jubo League clash
An Awami League (AL) activist was killed and 30 others were injured as supporters of rival AL and Jubo League leaders clashed in Shailakupa upazila yesterday.
Victim Rojdar Ali, 28, was son of Akbar Mondol of Achintapur village under Dignagar union of the upazila. The injured were admitted to different hospitals in the district.
Sources said, the clash took place in a bid to establish supremacy ahead of the union parishad election.
Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shailakupa police station, said supporters of Nasir Shah and Panna Kha locked in an altercation at Achintapur village. At one stage, they engaged in clash with lethal weapons, the OC added.
Nasir Shah is former upazila Jubo League president while Panna Kha is a member of the upazila AL committee.
Seriously injured Rojdar Ali, a loyalist of Nasir Shah, died on the way to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.
Critically injured Mintu and Shukur were admitted to Sadar Hospital while two others to Shailakupa health complex.
Twenty-two activists were later arrested in this connection, police said.
In Rangpur, at least one person was killed and 25 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Telepara village under Gangachara upazila yesterday, reports a correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kashem, 40, of the same village.
Police and locals said, two rival groups of villagers engaged in a clash after they went to catch fish from a water body at Telepara village.
At one stage, the two groups swooped on each other with bamboo sticks and other weapons leaving Kashem seriously injured on the spot and injuring 25 others.
Locals rushed Kashem to the Rangpur Medical Collage and Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, Rajib-ul-Islam, son of the deceased filed a case accusing 17 people with Gangachara police station in this connection.
Later, police arrested Poju Mia, 35, and Rashidul, 30, in this connection.
