Newly wed woman killed, housewife commits 'suicide'
A newly married woman was beaten to death while a housewife allegedly committed suicide over dowry in Sirajganj and Khagrachhari districts yesterday.
Arzina Begum, 18, was beaten to death allegedly by her husband over dowry at Baniagati of Belkuci upazila in Sirajganj yesterday, reports a correspondent.
Arzina of Haidarpur village in Kamarkhanda upazila was married to Zaharul Pramanik, a handloom worker, only 17 days ago, said Nasir Uddin, sub-inspector of Belkuci police station.
On the fateful morning, Zaharul beat her wife mercilessly demanding more dowry money though he was given a handsome amount at the time of wedding. Arzina died on the spot, the SI added.
Zaharul, along with his family members, went into hiding immediately after the incident.
In Khagrachhari, a housewife allegedly committed suicide over dowry at village Sobahanpur under Dighinala upazila yesterday noon.
Ayesha Begum, 23, killed herself at the house of her in-laws failing to bring dowry money demanded by her husband, police said.
Sub-inspector Mohammad Shamim of Dighinala police station said Ayesha was found hanging from the ceiling of the bamboo made house.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Her husband Ashraf Ali went into hiding immediately after the incident and no case was filed till writing the report at 2:50pm yesterday.
Abdul Motaleb, father-in-law of Ayesha, told reporters that there was no family feud and it was a case of suicide.
He, however, could not give any satisfactory reply to why his son fled after the incident.
Mohammad Abdul Malek, elder brother of the victim, claimed Ayesha was killed and hung by her in-laws over dowry. "Her husband demanded Tk 15,000 dowry a couple of months ago. We could not pay the amount as we are poor and helpless", he said.
In Naogaon, on Wednesday, a pregnant housewife allegedly committed suicide failing to fulfill the dowry demand of her husband at Kalmudana village in Sapahar upazila, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Babita, 22, wife of Shawkat Ali of the village and daughter of Alauddin of Baldiaghat village in the upazila.
Police quoting family sources said, Babita got married with Shawkat one year ago. But after some days Shawkat and his family members started torturing her to bring dowry from her poor parents.
A few days ago Babita's husband asked her to bring dowry money. As she refused to do so, Shawkat became angry and beat her mercilessly. Later, he threatened to divorce her. At this, Babita became shocked and returned to her parents' house.
Later, on the fateful day at about 10am she took pesticides and fell seriously ill. She was rushed to the local health complex where she breathed her last after an hour.
