Sylhet JCD activist dies, 12 injured in Noakhali

Sylhet JCD activist Sourav succumbed to injuries while 12 people were injured as JCD factions clashed in Noakhali yesterday. Struggling for 12 days with life support, JCD activist schoolboy Sourav Ahmed Babu, 17, who sustained serious injuries in an attack by rival faction, died at a private hospital in Sylhet city early yesterday, reports our staff correspondent. On July 22 evening, rivals called Sourav out of his house at Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) Upshahar and took him to the nearby Adarsha High School. There they gave him a good beating with steel pipe and threatened with dire consequences for being with their rival faction. Sourav was immediately admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, wherefrom he was shifted to the Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College Hospital in Sylhet. Later he was taken to the Apollo hospitals in the capital. While Sourav's friends were shifting him by an autorickshaw from the Osmani hospital on the following day they also came under attack by a group of 10 to 12 near the Bluebird High School & College in the city. During the attack Sourav sustained head injuries. Sourav was given life support at Apollo hospitals. On Sunday, he was brought back to a private hospital in Sylhet where he breathed his last at 2am yesterday. Sourav's mother Monwara Begum filed a case with the Sylhet Kotwali PS on July 26 accusing nine people. However, none of the accused has yet been arrested, said the investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ali of the police station. In Noakhali, at least 12 people including Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) district unit president Nurul Amin Khan were injured in an attack by rival faction in town hall area yesterday afternoon. Nurul Amin was admitted to Dhaka Medical Collage and Hospital in a critical condition, reports a correspondent. Of the injured, Kamrul Islam and Russel were admitted to Noakhali General Hospital, while Shahin, Babu, Sobuj, Ripon, Iqbal and others were admitted to different clinics of the town. Sources said at around 12:00pm, president and organising secretary of newly elected committee of city JCD brought out a victory procession from bus stand point of the town. When their rally reached town hall area, a group of supporters of vice-president Abdul Motin attacked on the processionists with lethal weapons. They hit Nurul Amin in his head and legs and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him seriously injured. Besides, eleven others were also injured during the attack. The attackers also vandalised two passenger buses. Police arrested four people including two students from the spot.
