Students of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) Department of Maolana Bhasani University of Science and Technology (BMUST) here yesterday continued agitation demanding BSc (Engineering) degree in place of BSc (Honours) degree. To press the demand, the 250 students of the department held a token hunger strike at the Shaheed Minar premises on the campus yesterday. Earlier on July 26, they held a press conference at Tangail Press Club where Mohammad Noyeem Uddin, a fourth year second semester student of BGE department, read out a written statement containing their demand. They told the press that although the University Grants Commission (UGC) has already decided to give the BGE students BSc (Engineering) degree in place of BSc (Honours) degree about five months ago, the decision could not be implemented so far due to shortage of teachers and indifference of the department teachers. "Several teachers of the department are against the move to turn it into engineering department. They are opposing the decision as six out of the seven teachers of the department have come from other departments. They fear that they may lose jobs if the decision is implemented," the statement said. "We are boycotting the classes and examinations since July 20 last to realise our demand. We have already informed the university authorities including vice-chancellor, registrar and teachers of the department but to no effect," said Shibbir Ahmed, another student of the department. "So, we have decided to continue our movement until realisation of the demand," he added.
