Mother, her baby found hanging from ceiling
Husband held for interrogation as deaths raise questions
A mother and her one and a half years old son were found hanging from the ceilings at their house in court area of Chapainawabganj town on Saturday night.
The deceased were identified as Sheuli, 20, wife of Abu Bakkar Siddique, a class four employee of Rohonpur land office, and their son Mahmudul Hasan.
Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Ahsanul Haque quoted two neighbours as saying that they heard groaning coming from inside the house at around 8:00pm.
They entered the house by breaking open the door and found Sheuli hanging from the ceiling in the dining room and her son in the bathroom.
Police said they recovered a chit from the dining room that reads, "I am taking away my son. You marry a woman and be happy with the new wife."
Sheuli's husband Abu Bakkar was not present at the house during the incident. He was later taken to police custody for interrogation.
Sheuli's uncle Zamal Uddin and other family members said Abu Bakkar married Sheuli two and a half years ago.
At the time of marriage, her Saudi expatriate father gave Abu Bakkar Tk 1.15 lakh as dowry.
They alleged that Sheuli's husband used to torture her regularly demanding Tk 1 lakh more.
The OC of Sadar Police Station said they are quizzing Abu Bakkar and waiting for autopsy reports.
Sheuli's uncle Golam Rabbani filed an unnatural death case with the Police Station yesterday.
