Assault on teachers triggers protest
Students of Goswami Durgapur High School in Kushtia Sadar upazila yesterday boycotted their classes and examinations demanding immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment to those involved in assaulting two teachers of the school on Thursday.
Police arrested two people following a case filed by one of the two assaulted teachers with Islamic University Police Station against nine unidentified people the same day. The arrestees are Bokul Ali and Golap Hossain of Durgapur area.
School sources said local Awami League leader Mahir Uddin was elected chairman of the school managing committee recently. Upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO) was the chairman of the committee and his tenure expired in December last year. The education board ordered holding of election to the post after the UNO expressed his opinion not to continue as the chairman of the committee.
Newly elected chairman Mahir went to the school at around 11:00am on Thursday and asked Headmaster Ehsanul Haq to send names of two people of his choice to the education board as members of the committee.
As headmaster refused to do so before expiry of the tenure of the present committee, Mahir had an altercation with him in presence of some teachers who sided with the headmaster.
While returning home from school, Assistant Headmaster Hasan Jahid Pias and senior teacher Fazlul Haq came under attack by a gang near a bridge at Badumazu village at around 4:30pm.They took the teachers to a nearby poultry farm, beat them up severely and left the scene.
Hearing screams, local people rushed to the spot, rescued the teachers and took them to Kushtia General Hospital. Assistant Headmaster Hasan Jahid Pias filed a case with Islamic University Police Station accusing nine unidentified criminals immediately after the incident.
The incident sparked protest in the area. Locals have urged the police superintendent of Kushtia and the officer-in-charge of Islamic University Police Station to nab the criminals involved in assaulting the teachers.
The students of the school also took out a procession in the area yesterday and held a rally protesting assault on their two teachers. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. Locals also expressed their solidarity with the demand.
Contacted, Officer-In-Charge (OC) of Islamic University Police Station Motiar Rahman said the drive is on to arrest the persons involved in Thursday's incident.
