Our Correspondent, Kushtia
Additional District Judge Court here yesterday granted bail to six Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists of Islamic University unit. The leaders are BCL IU unit organising secretary Abu Jar Giffary Gaffar, joint secretary Mahbub Hossain Khokon and activists Zillur Rahman, Mahmuduzzaman Liton, Hasan Sohel Tagar and Saha Ala and Anisul Islam Mithu. The court however, turned down bail prayers of 13 other BCL activists. Police arrested the six BCL men during a raid on Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahan Hall of the university on July 8. Police raided the hall after a BCL group led by Gaffar and Khokon ransacked four university offices and created panic by firing blank gunshots. Police arrested the 13 activists as they put up barricade on Kushtia-Jhenidah highway at Madhupur, two kilometers off the campus protesting the arrest of BCL men and demanding their release. The BCL men clashed with police when they went to remove the barricade. Police filed two separate cases against the arrestees. On July 9 Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Kushtia sent them to jail. Sources said the two factions are at loggerheads over forming committee of the university BCL unit.
