<i>All because she wanted a probe into 'graft'</i>
Woman Vice-Chairman of Dashmina Upazila Parishad Shamsunnahar Dolly on Tuesday alleged that she was beaten up by upazila AL Organising Secretary Iqbal Mahmud Liton in a meeting of the upazila coordination committee on July 26.
She made the allegation at a press conference at Patuakhali Press Club and demanded exemplary punishment to the AL leader. Leaders and members of upazila Nagorik Committee, a forum of the local elite, were also present at the conference.
Dolly alleged that Iqbal Mahmud entered the auditorium and swooped on her soon after she placed a proposal in the meeting to form a committee to probe collapse of an under-construction building of Abdur Rashid Talukder Degree College on July 22 and misuse of 30 tonnes rice allotted to the college for development of its playground.
Iqbal hurled abuse at me and physically assaulted me in presence of the upazila nirbahi officer and upazila parishad chairman, the woman vice-chairman said in her written statement at the conference.
She said the UNO, at one stage, called police who brought the situation under control and rescued me from there.
Nagorik Committee leaders and members gave an ultimatum to arrest AL leader Iqbal Mahmud by July 28. Otherwise, they threatened to launch tougher agitation programme, including hartal, in the upazila from July 29.
At the press conference, Dolly alleged that Iqbal Mahmud and his men are involved in tender scams, looting rice of different projects under Test Relief and Food for Work Programme.
Nagorik committee President Kazi Amir Hossain, Treasurer Mizanur Rahman, Krashak Federation leader Motaleb Mridha and Advocate Abdul Khaleq were present at the conference.
