12 missing as three trawlers capsize in Bagerhat, Rajshahi

At least 12 people went missing as three trawlers capsized yesterday and the day before in two separate incidents in Bagerhat and Rajshahi. At least 10 fishermen went missing on Saturday as two trawlers capsized in the Bay near Kachikhali of Swarankhola upazila of Bagerhat. Survivors said two trawlers with 24 fishermen sank in the rough sea in the afternoon. Fourteen of them were rescued by other trawlers while 10 remained missing, reports UNB. One of the sunken trawlers came from Swarankhola and the other one from Bhandaria for fishing in the Bay, they said. In Rajshahi, two people went missing as a boat carrying passengers and cattle capsized in the river Padma at Majardiar under Paba upazila yesterday, reports our staff correspondent. The missing people are seven-year-old Noor Banu, daughter of Minarul Islam of Thakurmara village of Haragram of Rajshahi city and Enamul Haque, 40, son of Ekram of Majardiar. Rescue teams of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and locals could not find the two persons as of filing of this report at 4:00 pm yesterday. Selim Mahmudul Hasan, upazila nirbahi officer and BDR men said, the boat carrying around 40 passengers and 31 cows started for Rajshahi Police Line terminal from Char Majardiar at around 8:00 in the morning. As the boat reached mid-river, it capsized due to strong current. Most of the passengers swam ashore while a few were rescued. Out of 31 cows, 16 were rescued, 12 died and three went missing. BDR men from Shahapur border outpost in Charghat upazila later recovered the boat with six dead cows at Tangon point, about 15km away from the place of occurrence.
