Pirates injure fishermen in Meghna, loot fishes, nets
At least 10 fishermen were injured in attack by pirates in the mid-Meghna River at Jaliarchar under Haimchar upazila on Tuesday.
Of the injured, Jalil Sardar, 35, and Rubel, 25, of Char Bhairabi were admitted to Haimchar upazila health complex in critical condition.
Sources said Jalil along with nine other fishermen went to the Meghna River to catch fish in the morning.
At one stage, a gang of armed pirates numbering 20/25 attacked and stabbed them indiscriminately with sharp weapons, leaving them injured.
Later, the gang looted fishes, fishing nets and mobile phones from them and fled the scene by a boat.
Hearing their hue and cry, other fishermen rescued them and admitted Jalil and Rubel to the health complex.
The other injured - Motaleb, Yusuf, Taher, Najimuddin, Didar and three others--were given first aid.
Our Correspondent in Satkhira adds: A pirate group abducted a fisherman from Moradul Char in the Mamundo River in the Sundarbans Tuesday evening.
Victim Belal Gazi, 19, is now held hostage in the deep forest for a ransom of Tk 50,000, police quoting the victim's relatives said.
The pirates set a deadline for payment of the ransom failing which the fisherman will face 'dire consequences', said the fishermen who managed to escape attack, police said.
Six fishermen with a boat went to the Sundarbans on Friday.
While returning to house after fishing they were attacked by the gang at Moradul Char in the Mamundo River.
The pirates abducted fisherman Belal Gazi, son of Abdul Karim Gazi of village Kalinchi in Shyamnagar upazila for ransom.
