Change of Inter-City Route

Protesters in Lalmonirhat block rail tracks

A Correspondent, Lalmonirhat
A large number of people under the banner of 'Lalmonirhat Swartho Sangrakkhan Committee' yesterday put up barricades on rail tracks at Lalmonirhat station protesting railway authorities' decision to run the intercity Lalmoni Express up to Rangpur instead of Lalmonirhat. The agitating people also submitted a memo to the railway authorities through a railway official demanding withdrawal of the decision within the next three days. Otherwise, they threatened to announce a tougher agitation programme in the district. Addressing a rally at Lalmonirhat rail station, the speakers said the intercity Lalmoni Express has been running on Lalmonirhat- Dhaka route since June 23, 2003. But the railway authorities recently decided to run the intercity train up to Rangpur Station. They demanded that the authorities concerned withdraw the decision for the sake of the people of Lalmorhat district. Captain (retd) Azizul Haque, journalists Gokul Roy and Belal Hossain, and advocate Nazrul Islam spoke. The blockade disrupted rail communications between Lalmonirhat and other districts for three hours from 10:00 am. Divisional Railway Traffic Superintendent Mostafizar Rahman received the memo and he faxed it to the authorities concerned.
