Bombs thrown at trader's house in Kushtia
Police arrested a top cadre of Janajuddha, a faction of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-ML) from a village in Gangni upazila in Meherpur yesterday.
Arrestee Mazharul Islam Swapan alias Moza, 34, son of Hafizur Rahman of Mothmura village in Gangni was the Meherpur district leader of the outfit.
Police said a team from Bamundi police in Gangni raided Swapan's house at Mothmura village at about 9.30 am and arrested him.
He is accused in several cases including that of two murders filed with Gangni police station.
Absconded for the last several years, Swapan was wanted by Meherpur police for long.
Till fling of this reports yesterday afternoon, police were interrogating him at Gangni police station.
In Kushtia, extortionists exploded bombs at the house of a businessman at Katlamari in Mirpur upazila on Friday night after failing to realise the illegal toll.
Police said a gang went to the house of Khairuzzaman, a readymade garments trader at Amla Bazar at midnight and asked him to come out.
Getting no response, the criminals threw two bombs on the house.
The first bomb exploded on the yard of Khairuzzaman while the second one on the window damaging it partially. The bomb blasts created panic in the area.
A police team from Amla camp led by Sub-Inspector Sarif Manjur rushed to the spot and recovered splinters.
Khairuzzaman told the journalists that a group of local criminals demanded Tk. 1 lakh from him several days ago.
"The gang demanded the money over phone, I did not respond to it thinking that they would not harm me as they were known to me," Khairuzzaman said.
