Khulna AL calls to implement dev projects

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will visit Koira upazila of Khulna and Shymanagar upazila of Satkhira today, report our correspondents. She will open the programmes in those upazilas for disbursing cheques as house-building grant among the families hit by cyclone Aila in 2009. An amount of Tk 19.50 crore will be distributed among 19, 500 families in Shyamnagar and Assassuni upazilas of Satkhira while Tk 54.80 crore among 27,400 families in Koira upazila of Khulna. The six-member disaster management committee under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army made the list of 19, 500 Aila- hit families in Shyamnagar and Assassuni upazilas, said Satkhira deputy commissioner (DC) Md Abdus Samad. Each of the families of the upazilas will be able to draw Tk 20,000 until by July 31 by opening a bank account with Tk 10 only, district administration sources told our Satkhira correspondent. The Prime Minister is also expected to address a public gathering at Nakipur High School ground in Shyamnagar upazila. In Khulna, the prime minister will open the cheque disbursement programme at Amadi Jaigirmahal College ground at 3:00 pm, reports our staff correspondent. Meanwhile, leaders of Khulna Awami League yesterday demanded early implementation of some very important projects for greater economic interest of the south-western region of the country. They made their demand while addressing a press conference at Khulna Press Club in the morning. President of Khulna district Awami League and a member of central working committee of the party Sheikh Harun-ar-Rashid read out a written statement at the press conference requesting the prime minister to allocate fund required to implement the projects. The projects are construction of a deep seaport at Akram Point, a full-fledged TV station in Khulna, construction of a tourist spot of international standard in the Sundarbans, an IT village, an agriculture university and establishment of a cadet college in Khulna. Khulna Awami League also expressed its solidarity with ongoing movement of several professional and socio-cultural organisations to press home demands for construction of at least 15-foot high ring embankments in the Aila affected areas of Khulna and Satkhira districts, permanent arrangement for supply of safe drinking water to Aila affected areas, dredging of Kobadak river, measures to transform school, college and madrasa buildings as cyclone centres in case cyclone hits, distribution of tiffin in all schools and madrasas free of cost and active initiatives at state level to enable the Sundarbans win the race for being one of seven wonders of world.
