BNP leader murdered allegedly by AL men
A local BNP leader was murdered allegedly by Awami League activists in Nityanandapur Union under Shailkupa upazila yesterday.
Saiful Islam, 40, son of Late Nasir Uddin Biswas of Shahbajpur village under the union, was the organising secretary of BNP ward unit.
Police quoted local people as saying that a group of AL activists led by Nityanandapur Union Jubo League Secretary Faruk swooped on Saiful when he along with a villager named Amod Ali was working in a jute field Shahbajpur village at around 10:00am.
They hit Saiful with sharp weapons and left the scene, leaving him critically injured. Locals took Saiful to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 1:30pm. Amod Ali also received injuries during the attack and is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Locals said the incident was a sequel to previous enmity between Faruk and Saiful over establishing supremacy in the union.
Shailkupa upazila BNP General Secretary Rakibul Hasan Dipu claimed that Saiful was killed by Nityanandapur Union Jubo League Secretary Faruk and his men. He demanded immediate arrest of the killers.
Contacted, upazila AL General Secretary Mosharraf Hossain said Faruk is not a Jubo League leader. If any AL activist is involved in the attack, he will face legal action, the AL leader said.
No case was filed with Sailkupa Police Station in connection with the incident as of 7:00pm yesterday.
