Need for more cyclone shelters underscoredSpeakers at a discussion in the port city on Wednesday emphasised setting up more cyclone shelters and creating mass awareness to save properties and human lives from the natural disasters. The meeting was organised by Caritas Chittagong Region at its Training Hall, marking the devastating cyclone that claimed 1.39 lakh human lives in the coastal belt of Chittagong in 1991. Prof Dr Jamal Nazrul Islam was the chief guest at the discussion with Caritas Regional Director James Gomes in the chair. Chittagong University Geography Department Prof Abdul Haque was the special guest while Caritas officials Abu Taher and Sabbir Ahmed Chowdhury and three representatives from April 29 cyclone affected areas spoke. Prof Jamal Nazrul in his speech called upon the government and social organisations for taking measures to combat such natural disasters. He said if the affected people can be brought to the cyclone shelters within ten to fifteen minutes of any forecast of cyclones it would be possible to save many lives. Prof Haque put up bad effects of the climate change that are causing many disasters including cyclones, earthquakes, heavy rainfall and drought. Bangladesh Sanatan Dharma Sangstha launched its activities in the port city at its Rahamatganj office on Sunday. A 31-member executive committee was formed with Advocate Shyamal Chakrabartya and Goutam Chowdhury as chairman and secretary general for two years. Other office-bearers are Senior Vice Chairman: Biswajit Sarker, Vice Chairmen: Sajal Nandi and Shibu Dutta, Senior Joint Secretary General: Apu Kumar Dhar, Joint Secretary Generals: Raju Acharya and Ashutosh Das, Organising Secretary: Himel Chowdhury Tutul, Assistant Organising Secretary: Mitu Chowdhury, Office Secretary: Babun Das, Assistant Office Secretary: Kalpataru Das and Finance Secretary: Khokan Shil. Feni Zila Samity Chattagram organised a day-long medical camp on the Manurhat Abdul Haq Degree College campus at Chhagal Naiya in Feni on Friday. Samity President Nurun Newaj Selim inaugurated the camp where Mostafizul Kabir, Belayet Hossain, Mohiuddin Milon and Jamila Haq Trust Vice-President Azizul Haq Chowdhury spoke with Samity Adviser Dr Mulkutur Rahman in the chair. A total of 1250 patients were given medical treatment and medicines free of cost at the camp conducted by Dr Mulkutur Rahman, Dr MA Rouf, Dr Sanaullah Shelly, Dr Md Omar Faruq, Dr Jabiur Hossain, Dr Sarwat Ara and Dr Mujibul Islam. 200 RMG workers' children get scholarships Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) organised a function for garment workers with a view to improving the worker-owner relationship in the port city on Saturday. The function was held at hilltop community centre -- The King of Chittagong -- under the workers welfare programme on the occasion of May Day. A total of 200 meritorious school children of garment workers received scholarships and educational materials while 76 supervisors and officials got evaluation certificates for management skills. BGMEA Acting President Nasir Uddin Chowdhury presided over the function where directors Md Liakat Ali Chowdhury, AM Chowdhury Salim, ANM Saif Uddin, Engineer Kafil Uddin Yusuf, Mohammad Musa, Md Farhat Abbas and Hasanuzzaman Chowdhury were present. Later, workers of Karnaphuli Sportswear Limited of Youngone Group, Azim-Mannan Garments Limited and Well Group performed at a colourful cultural function. Speakers at a view exchange meeting in the port city on Saturday called upon all to abide by the traffic rules to avert road accidents. Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nisacha) Chittagong City unit organised the meeting at a local community centre. Organisation central Chairman and actor Ilias Kanchan was the chief guest at the meeting with SM Abu Tayab in the chair. Transport businessman and former Chittagong City Corporation deputy mayor Dostagir Chowdhury, Chittagong District road Transport Owner Group President Manjurul Alam, Light Vehicles Drivers-Workers Union President Ali Akbar, Ward Councillors Advocate MA Naser, Advocate Rehana Begum Ranu and Anjuman Ara Begum, Nisacha Chittagong city leaders Lion Hakim Ali, journalists Chowdhury Farid, Shafiq Ahmed Sajib, Arich Ahmed Shah, Hamid Ullah and Shahnewaj Riton also spoke at the meeting. The speakers at the meeting urged all including drivers, vehicle owners and passengers as well as the pedestrians to commute showing more respect to traffic rules and urged the law enforcement agencies for playing more active role in minimising road accidents.
