Chittagong Central Jail authorities yesterday formed a three-member committee to investigate the sudden death of its chief security guard Nurul Islam Sunday evening. Fazlur Rahman, deputy inspector general (prisons) of Chittagong division, will head the investigation. Earlier, two prisoners--Suman and Jewel-- kept a Malaysian prisoner, Mehedeen Bin Hasin, hostage in ward No 14 (Padma) around 4:15pm on Sunday. They also confined on duty guard Abdul Jalil to the ward and beat him up as he went to rescue Mehedeen. On information, Nurul conducted a drive and rescued the prisoner and the guard. Nurul Islam, who was an asthma patient, fell sick soon after the incident, Jailor Mahbubul Alam said. “Nurul became very upset as some prisoners slapped him during the drive and I suggested that he go home and take rest,” the jailor said. Immediately after reaching home, Nurul felt pain in the chest and died on way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 6:30pm, the jailor quoted Nurul's family as saying.
