A newly married girl came under acid attack at Kamarjani village under Gouripur upazila of the district on Friday night.
The victim, Hanufa Akhter Beauty, is undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Abul Kashem of Kamarjani village in Gouripur upazila married off her daughter Hanufa Akhtar Beauty, 19, to Rafiqul Islam of Ramnagar village under Ishwarganj upazila on April 1.
Beauty and her husband went to Cox's Bazar for honeymoon on April 4 and returned to her father's house on Friday.
Family sources said a gang of criminals led by one Nurul Amin of the same village threw acid on Beauty when she came out of their house to respond to the call of nature at around 10:00pm.
They said Beauty passed the HSC examination from Gouripur Mohila College last year. One Mofazzal Hossain of Dulatabad Jangalia village had been stalking Beauty on her way to college as she refused his advances.
Talking to this correspondent, Beauty said a gang led by Nurul Amin, uncle of Mofazzal, threw acid on her on Friday night.
Md Kaiser Alam, a doctor of the burn unit of MMCH, told this correspondent that she received burn injuries in hands, throat, back and legs.
Victim's family said they will file a case against the gang with the police station concerned.
