23 leaders of rival BNP factions held
Twenty-three leaders of two rival factions of BNP arrested on charge of their involvement in Saturday's clash were sent to jail hajat yesterday after being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.
The arrestees include former upazila chairman Sayed Ali Karim and Mohammadpur Sadar UP chairman Akhteruzzaman, president and general secretary of Mohammadpur upazila BNP's rebel group and principal of Mohammadpur Aminur Rahman Degree College BNP leader Matiur Rahman, another BNP leader Prof Yunus Ali Sardar, president of Shalikha upazila unit Jatiyotabadi Jubo Dal (JJD) Toilet Munshi and JJD cadre Mushtak Ahmed.
Police on Saturday night arrested the leaders for their alleged involvement in Saturday's clash between two rival factions of Magura district unit BNP after sub-inspector of Magura Sadar police Subhas Chandra Biswas filed two separate cases under Explosives Substances Act.
Eighty-six leaders and activists of BNP's two factions were accused in the cases. The accused include president and secretary of Magura district unit BNP Kabir Murad and Ali Ahmed Biswas and secretary of the rebel group Iqbal Akhter Khan Kafur.
At least 16 peoplemagistrate Uttam Kumar Roy, four police constables and 11 BNP activistswere injured during a factional clash over holding party meetings separately on Saturday afternoon.
Cadres of the rival groups exploded at least 30 bombs and fired gunshots during the clash.
Party insiders said a faction led by BNP district unit president Kabir Murad had organised a meeting at Asaduzzaman auditorium in the town while general secretary of the same unit's rebel group Iqbal Akhter Khan Kafur called a separate meeting on the premises of his residence on Saturday afternoon triggering a conflict between two rival factions.
The two factions locked in a clash when supporters of Kafur with bombs, firearms and lethal weapons attacked a procession led by vice-president of the district unit Monowar Hossain Khan on way to the meeting venue at Asaduzzaman auditorium.
