Playmates kill boy over trifling issue

A group of schoolboys stabbed a playmate to death at Sunamganj district town on Saturday. Severely injured Shamsul Haque, 15, succumbed to injuries at Sylhet hospital at night. Son of poor rickshaw-puller Lalshad Ali, the victim hailed from Teghoria in the town. Locals and police said Shamsul had an altercation over a trifle issue with Badrul Alam, a student of class ten at Bulchand High School at Barpara playground Friday afternoon. The next day, Badrul along with some of his classmates swooped on Shamsul at Kazir point in the afternoon. They stabbed him severely before fleeing the scene. Locals took the victim to local hospital. He was shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital where he died at about 7:30 pm. Sources said locals caught one of the fleeing attackers and handed him over to police. But police freed him after a few minutes for reasons unknown. Meanwhile, the victim's father filed a case with Sunamganj Sadar police station accusing six. They are Badrul, Sarwar and Dilwar, their father Samaruddin, Naim and Shimul. Among them, Naim was caught just after the stabbing incident but police freed him after some time, locals alleged. Contacted, officer-in-charge of Sunamganj police station Ataur Rahman denied the allegation and said police can not arrest anybody without specific charge. “There was no case when the boy was brought to the police. However, police are now trying to nab all the accused”, he said. Meantime, police yesterday arrested Shimul Miah, one of the six accused.
